The last coffee grinder you'll buy (2010-05-18)
I've had other plastic burr grinders before. This one has really lasted for me. I've had mine for over 3 years now and it's still chugging. I've even gone through other coffee makers while I've had this. I expect this to last as long as my stand mixer and my Miele vacuum. Only drawback is that the grinds can get static and stick even to the glass recepticle.
Three years and three months (2010-04-26)
This review would have been a five star one except for the fact that my unit died this morning. There is no question but that I will buy another one. $200 for an appliance that was used at least once a day every day for the duration of its motor's existence is inexpensive for what the unit delivered day in and day out. From what I have read, I believe I got one with a weak "heart."
It is the best at what it does and is easily cleaned and reassembled. I am thorough and do this about once a week and it takes all of ten minutes. I called the 800 number and for the first couple of years they happily supplied me with free extra cleaning brushes. Last time I called, I felt guilty and paid them $1.25 apiece for a supply of five of them and I will not have to call again now for several years.
I do not consider myself a coffee gourmet but I am very selective and buy beans from a variety of both local and online sources. All I do know for certain is that the coffee tastes better when it is milled by a machine such as this. I got proof of that this morning when I had to revert to my little plastic "chopper" for the first time in over three years. I do wonder, however, why the motor in that thing is still alive but not in the KitchenAid.
About an ounce heavier than the original (2010-01-09)
Oz is right, this is a heavier version than the one that originally came with the grinder. It felt heavier so I weighted it and it is. It is a bit sturdier. Some people have complained about the one that came with the grinder, saying it felt fragile. Maybe this will satisfy them.
Perfect Fit & Little To No Static Cling (2009-09-06)
A replacement part for the original glass jar fits perfectly and rarely, if ever, develops that static electricity which causes grinds either to stick to the jar or explode in all directions typical of plastic bins. To prevent grinds from landing on the deck when removing the jar, just vibrate it a couple of times before pulling it out.
Just a jar (2008-03-04)
This glass on this jar is slightly thicker than the original one that came with my machine. But that's a good thing.
Poor customer service (2010-04-07)
I was slow to buy this coffee grinder because of the price. I went ahead and the grinder arrived on time.
Two weeks later I began to have problems with it. I called the company and was told me I had inserted the grinding burr up-side-down. I was advised how to reset the coffee maker, the grinding burr was pulled out and inserted the correct way. It did not work.
The Capresso rep. told me they would repair the grinder with no charges and send a pre-paid shipping label.
Two weeks went by and I received a letter telling me I was eligible for a free repair. NO SHIPPING LABEL.
I called another rep. who said I would receive the free mailing label in a day or two since it was mailed by a different department.
I waited another 10 days and called them re:NO SHIPPING LABEL. I was informed that it had not been mailed and would be "over-nighted to me in "MAYBE" a day or two."
I really feel Amazon should not carry this product. No idea when I might grind my own coffee beans again.
Ok, but I was expecting more... (2010-02-15)
The design is nice, but what I was really looking for was a much quieter coffee grinder, and this model, while quieter than my previous grinder (a 5 year old Cuisinart grinder that sounded like a jet plane taking off), is not AS quiet as I was hoping. Guess I should've gone for the even more expensive one. What I do like about this one versus the more expensive model is that it will actually hold an entire bag of coffee beans, which is nice. On the whole, I'm not terribly upset, but if you're looking for a super quiet coffee grinder, go for the more expensive model.
This KitchenAid Coffee Grinder gives you access to fresh-ground beans every time you brew. Though your coffee is only as good as the beans you buy, any brew will taste better using a fresh grind with all of the flavors and aromas just released. The oversized bowl on this coffee grinder holds four ounces, enough to brew a 10-cup pot. Use the pulse control to control the grind size from very fine for drip coffee or espresso to coarse for your French Press.
